How to pick out a burner?

First, what is a burner?  A burner is a tool that can be used as a programmer (PROGRAMMER) to write data into programmable integrated circuits.

A programmer is mainly used to program (or write) chips such as microcontrollers (including embedded), memory (including BIOS).  A programmer mainly modifies the programs in read-only memory. 

A programmer is usually connected to a computer and used with programming software.

Since engineers develop components, most of them are developed on the manufacturer's configuration development board or burned on the homemade simulator,

However, when it comes to batch operation, the burning function of the development board will be found to be far from enough to meet the mass production capacity.  Therefore, a burner is needed

So, do you know which chips need to be burned?

In general, Nor Flash/Nand flash, EMMC, EEPROM, EPROM, Micro-controller, CPLD, CMOS PLD, FPGA, Anti-fuse... etc., need to be burned in this process.


Types of burners?

Burners can be divided into manual burners, automatic burners, online burners and UFS burners

Manual burner:

It is realized by connecting the PC through USB and accessing the LAN through a network cable to realize local or remote PC communication.  This process can be run independently offline, with 

convenient operation and easy expansion, so it is suitable for small batch operations.

Generally speaking, such burners support a large number of models, but due to the limitations of the supporting fixture test seat, they are only used for one type of package and cannot be used 

for other packages, so the cost is high;

However, this type of —— offline burning can avoid the loss of disassembly after the chip has problems in burning and debugging, and the board removal burning is stable and efficient, which is 

suitable for small batch production.

In addition, this type of burner has a complete set of functions, allowing users to organize common command sequences such as erase, check, program, check, and encrypt into single commands 

that can be completed at will.It is worth noting that in general, the burners that support more chip models are relatively better and can maximize the output ratio.

Automatic recorder

Burn online

That is, the chip is first attached to the PCB board and then burned in.  However, due to the flexibility of online burning (the product is produced first and then different firmware can be burned in 

according to user orders).

Speaking of the advantages of online burning, it is suitable for large-scale operation, high production capacity, and security is guaranteed. It can realize FRB file encryption to effectively avoid hacker intrusion.

As for its disadvantages, it is not easy to rework, which can easily cause batch loss, false soldering or component quality problems, and improper operation may lead to unsuccessful burning, so the stability is low.

However, due to the low cost of equipment, it has become a burning method chosen by many manufacturers.


UFS burner

It is a manual mass production IC burner, which can expand the number of burners to up to 96, and the burning speed can reach 180 Mbytes per second; of course, the actual burning speed varies from chip to chip.

At the same time, it can support multiple burners to work together on the same PC, which can fully meet the needs of small batch copy operations.  It is reported that the price of this UFS burner ranges from 

several hundred to 15,000 yuan.


How do we choose the right ones?

Engineers need to select the burn-in device that conforms to the actual production scheme according to the size of the chip capacity, the amount of quantity and the budget.

If the mass production is large and stable, you can choose an automated burner.

If it is a small mass production, you can choose a manual burner.
